Summary

Offers grants in several areas including medical research, medical education, and occasionally general education or basic human services. There are two main tracks depending on the size of the request. For requests over $25,000, applicants must first submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) that outlines things like the title and description of the proposed program, the need it addresses, the goals and methodology, an estimated budget, and a timeline. These bigger grant requests are reviewed quarterly, tied to board meetings, with fixed deadlines throughout the year (around January, April, July, and October).

For smaller grants (up to $25,000), there is a simpler application path. These are more limited, and preference tends to be given to organizations in the New England area.

There is also an Award in Neuroscience. This is for post‑doctoral researchers (those who have completed between about three to six years of post‑doctoral work) affiliated with U.S. medical schools, academic hospitals, or research institutions. Candidates must be nominated by a senior institutional leader (e.g. dean), meet eligibility in terms of their degree (MD, PhD, or both), devote a large portion of their time (around 75%) to the research, and provide letters of recommendation. The research must be neuroscience‑focused.

Eligible applicants are non‑profits, academic institutions, and research entities; not individuals acting outside of such institutions. Applicants with appropriate Visa status may be eligible provided they can complete the work in the U.S.

The intent of the funds is to support high‑quality research, educational program development, or human service efforts that demonstrate strong methodology, need, and capacity. The goal is to further knowledge, strengthen institutions, and improve outcomes in health, education, or basic welfare.
